Trains are a major part of our history and culture and still play an important role in contemporary society. They’re a central mode of transportation and full of charm. Most charming are the iconic cross-country train trips, and today, these trips are available as luxury vacations. Some of the most famous, unique and exciting trips include The Canadian in Canada, The Ghan in Australia, The Trans-Siberian Express in Russia and The Suite Train Shiki-Shima in Japan.
The Canadian in Canada
Travelling within Canada can be more convenient, as you won’t need to fly to another destination before taking your train trip. The Canadian has been operating in Canada for 151 years. Its trip runs from Vancouver to Toronto. On a 3 to 4-day trip, you will get to view and visit the Rockies, Pacific Northwest, the Prairies and more of Canada’s natural landscape. For Canadian’s, this can be an exciting vacation that’s close to home.
The Ghan in Australia
The Ghan is the most famous train in Australia and has been operating since 1929. It runs from Darwin to Adelaide, crossing through the Outback, and stopping in Alice Springs. You could take a 4-day luxury trip and see more of Australia than you would with any other mode of transportation. But, if you’re craving even more adventure at a more affordable price, check out the Overland. The Overland train is a popular choice amongst budget travellers and backpackers, and it's also shorter, running from Melbourne to Adelaide.
The Trans-Siberian Express in Russia
The Trans-Siberian Express is internationally known and recognized. Perhaps because it’s the longest railway in the world. Built in 1916, the railway now offers a long, round trip from Moscow to Vladivostok, a ride through Siberia, Manchuria or Mongolia, or a trip to Beijing. If you choose, you can take a luxury trip on the Golden Eagle Trans-Siberian Express or take a more affordable weeklong ride.
The Suite Train Shiki-Shima in Japan
In 2017, the Cruise Train Seven Stars, Japan’s oldest luxury train, was joined by the Suite Train Shiki-Shima. In fact, the Suite Train Shiki-Shima has made an amazing impression on tourists worldwide. It’s quickly become one of the most popular train trips in the world. That said, it’s exclusive and the train only takes 34 passengers, so if you want to ride, you’ll need to book your trip at least a year or two in advance. If you’re just eager to see Japan, other luxury lines have plenty of room, including the Cruise Train Seven Stars and another new addition, the Twilight Express Mizukaze.
